For more than four decades, he has been known only by a case number: NamUs UP928.

No name. No known family. No answers.

On April 3, 1980, a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on State Road 9 in Bunnell, Florida, struck and killed a pedestrian who was standing in the outside lane. The man carried no identification, and despite efforts to identify him, his name has remained unknown.

He was a white male, estimated to be a young adult, approximately 5'8" tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a white button-up shirt, tan pants, black socks and brown shoes.

More than 45 years later, The Florida Themis Project is working with authorities to give him another chance at identification.

The Florida Themis Project is raising $8,000 to fund the exhumation and DNA testing necessary to move this case forward.

Modern DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy have created new opportunities to identify people whose names have been unknown for decades. DNA obtained from his remains could potentially identify biological relatives and ultimately restore his identity.

Somewhere, a family may have spent more than four decades wondering what happened to a son, brother, uncle or other loved one who simply disappeared.

NamUs UP928 deserves his name back. That family deserves the chance for answers.

Jonathan MacDonald was just two days shy of his 19th birthday when he was found murdered in Golden Gate City, Florida, on October 31, 2021.

Years later, his family is still waiting for justice.

Someone knows what happened to Jonathan. Someone has the information that could help solve his murder.

The Florida Themis Project is working to give that person another reason to come forward.

Our Goal: Raise $3,000

There is currently a combined $27,000 reward being offered by Jonathan's family and Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers for information in this case.

The Florida Themis Project is raising an additional $3,000 with the goal of bringing the total potential reward to $30,000.

A $30,000 reward could provide a powerful incentive for someone with critical information to finally come forward.

Tips to Crime Stoppers can be submitted 100% anonymously, allowing someone with information to help investigators without revealing their identity.

For Jonathan's family, this isn't simply an unsolved case.

It's their son. Their brother. Their loved one.

The passage of time does not diminish their need for answers or their right to justice.

When 16-year-old Sophia Veronica Cover disappeared from her Collier County home on July 31, 2026, The Florida Themis Project began working with her family to increase awareness and expand media coverage.

Our Advocacy

During the 11-day search, Themis:

Created and distributed missing-person flyers and social media content across multiple platforms.

Maintained direct communication with Sophia's family.

Contacted local, regional and national media outlets.

Connected journalists with Sophia's family for coverage.

Coordinated outreach with Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers.

Reached out to community organizations, social media pages and influencers to amplify the case.

Published additional coverage and video content.

Shared verified updates and corrected misinformation.

Encouraged residents to review surveillance footage from the relevant timeframe.

Founder and President Lauren Samples was interviewed by Gulf Coast News about Sophia's disappearance and Themis's advocacy efforts. The case also received national coverage, including People and the New York Post.

Sophia Is Found

On August 11, 2026, Sophia was located safe in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Sophia's father provided The Florida Themis Project with a video announcing that she had been found and asked Themis to release it publicly. We shared the announcement and immediately updated our previous missing-person posts.

Sophia's case demonstrates Themis's role in missing-person cases: supporting families, sustaining public awareness, connecting families with media and resources, and keeping cases visible until answers are found.

Kyle Byrtus was 25 years old when he was found murdered in Lehigh Acres on August 15, 2013. His case remains unsolved.

Our Involvement:

On the 10-year anniversary of Kyle's murder, The Florida Themis Project:

Launched a renewed social media awareness campaign and created new cold-case flyers.

Collaborated with Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers to secure two billboards in Lee County featuring Kyle's case and the reward for information.

Collaborated with True Crime Garage to bring Kyle's case to their large national audience through a dedicated podcast episode.

Featured Kyle's case on the Paradise After Dark: Missing & Unsolved podcast.

Continued sharing Kyle's case across social media to renew public attention a decade after his murder.

These efforts brought Kyle's case to local audiences throughout Southwest Florida as well as a much larger national true-crime audience.

Kyle's case remains unsolved.

Naples, Florida | November 2025
Outcome: Located Alive After Eight Days Missing; Later Passed Away

When 68-year-old Matthew “Mattfish” Bailey disappeared from Collier County on November 7, 2025, The Florida Themis Project joined efforts to help bring him home.

Our Involvement

Maintained direct contact with Matthew’s family.

Created and distributed missing-person flyers.

Contacted We Are The Essentials, helping mobilize their team to Naples for a ground search.

Participated in the ground search and was present when Matthew was located.

President Lauren Samples was interviewed by WINK News about the search.

On November 15, Matthew was found alive after eight days missing and transported to the hospital. Sadly, he passed away five days later on November 20.

When 66-year-old Theresa Hartley disappeared in March 2023, The Florida Themis Project joined efforts to support her family and the search.

Donated water, snacks, bug spray and raincoats for search participants.

Continued sharing Theresa's case to help keep it visible.

Theresa remains missing. The Florida Themis Project continues to stand with her family and hopes that the circumstances of her disappearance will one day be resolved.
